About the museum
The fahr(T)raum in Mattsee is dedicated to the car designer Ferdinand Porsche (1875–1951). His path from electrical engineering apprentice via the Lohner-Porsche and the Austro-Daimler racing cars to the Volkswagen Beetle is traced here through original vehicles, sketches and exhibits. The show expressly does not see itself as a classic vintage car museum, but as an experience world in which many pieces may be touched and tried out.
The building stands on the grounds of a former shoe factory whose industrial character has been preserved. On roughly 3,500 square metres of exhibition space, the rooms show historic racing cars, automobiles, tractors and, since January 2023, aircraft as well; the event hall has been extended by more than 800 square metres, and the historic aircraft Hansa Brandenburg C1 and Klemm L20 hang from its ceiling.
Besides the permanent exhibition there are changing special exhibitions, a children's workshop, Carrera racetracks and racing simulators. In the summer half-year, chauffeured rides in historic vehicles are offered. The museum is operated by FAHRTRAUM GmbH.
