About the museum
The memorial was built in 1974 next to the Protestant church in Naßwald and commemorates the brothers Johann and Georg Hubmer, the founders of the village. Georg Hubmer (1755–1833), known as the "Raxkönig" (King of the Rax), opened up the Höllental around 1800 for the extraction of charcoal wood and at times employed around 400 woodworkers. This made him the largest employer in the area, and among other things he endowed the school and prayer house, which today serves as the parish church.
The centrepiece of the site is a faithfully reconstructed woodcutters' hut made of round timber with a kitchen and sleeping area, furnished as a museum. On display are tools and documentation on the life of the woodcutters and the history of log floating. Models, hiking trails and shady and sunny rest areas complement the grounds.
Special tradition: Sterz is prepared over an open fire in the manner of more than 200 years ago; such meals and guided tours are possible with advance booking.
