About the museum
The Belvedereschlössl was built in the 16th century (possibly earlier) as a pleasure lodge of the Freisegg estate. After several changes of ownership, Johann Conrad Albrecht von Albrechtsburg had the building rebuilt by 1688; in 1780 the market town of Stockerau bought it. Later it served, among other things, as an outbuilding, a country seat, a residence and – in the garden – as a machine factory.
The district museum itself opened on 24 July 1910 in two rooms of the town hall, was later expanded and moved to the old church school; during the war years the collections were evacuated. In the mid-1980s the museum moved to the renovated Belvedereschlössl, which has since served as a cultural centre with events and the "Galerie am Dachboden".
In the basement, the museum shows on around 670 square metres palaeontology, prehistory and early history (including finds from Großmugl with the moon idol of around 500 BC), mineralogy, numismatics and natural history. There are also sections on church art, weapons and military history, as well as on trade, crafts, industry, post and railways, schools and folklore, which tell the story of Stockerau's development "from village to town". A separate memorial recalls the poet Nikolaus Lenau.
