About the museum

In the former Sanatorium Dr. Hoffmann in Kierling near Klosterneuburg, the writer Franz Kafka died on June 3, 1924, at the age of 40, as a result of laryngeal tuberculosis. He had been transferred here from the Vienna University Clinic on April 19, 1924. He was accompanied and cared for by his partner Dora Diamant and his friend Robert Klopstock; numerous relatives and friends visited him.

In July 1983, on Kafka's 100th birthday, the Österreichische Franz Kafka Gesellschaft set up a study and memorial room in the house. At the time, by its own account, it was the only Kafka museum in the world. For the 90th anniversary of Kafka's death on June 3, 2014, the room was thoroughly redesigned.

Since then, the final period of Kafka's life, at the stations Pernitz/Ortmann, Vienna and Kierling, has been the focus. On display are letters, photographs, documents and mementos; the most important exhibits come from Kafka's patient file at the Vienna University Clinic, including the temperature chart and admission record of April 10, 1924. A freely usable library with Kafka's works, secondary literature and translations complements the room.
