About the museum
The Literaturmuseum Altaussee was founded in 1970 by Alois Mayrhuber as a literature and local history museum. For a long time it was housed in the Steinberghaus. In 2005, at the suggestion of the writer Barbara Frischmuth, it moved into the Kur- und Amtshaus in the district of Fischerndorf, where it is located on the third floor.
Since the 19th century the place has been a popular summer retreat for poets, actors and artists. The permanent exhibition presents authors who lived, worked or spent the summer here, including Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Friedrich Torberg and Jakob Wassermann. Among the originals are Theodor Herzl's bicycle and a sound recording of Friedrich Torberg. The cabinet of curiosities of the Ausseer painter Horst K. Jandl has been expanded with media technology.
After a comprehensive redesign, the house has been open again since January 2024. It is barrier-free, and the texts are available in English and as an audio guide. An association runs the museum and offers readings, literary village walks for groups and, together with Salinen Austria AG, an annual scholarship for research into local history and regional writers.
