About the museum
The Arlerhof in the Au district of Abtenau is considered the most beautiful surviving farmstead in the Auwinkel; its history goes back to 1325. The farm was worked until 1980, and since 1982 it has housed the Abtenau local history museum.
The residential building dates from the mid-19th century: the ground floor is built of river stones, the upper floor of timber. Among the things to see are the Rauchkuchl (smoke kitchen) with open hearth and cheese kettle, and the parlour with tiled stove. As is usual in the Lammertal, the stable building stands apart from the farmhouse, so that at least one building could be saved in case of fire. The threshing floor displays farm implements and part of the bird collection of the Archabbey of St. Peter in Salzburg; the former cattle stall is now used as an event space.
The Troadkasten, the grain store, houses a beekeeping museum, and next to it stands a bee house typical of the Lammertal. The complex also includes a fully working mill with an overshot waterwheel and a sawmill with a Venetian frame saw that operated in the Fischbach district until 1980; in summer, flour is ground and timber is sawn there. According to the tourist board, a fire brigade museum is also part of the tour.
