About the museum
The Museum Burg Golling was set up in 1969 as a small local-history museum in Golling Castle, whose origins date back to the 13th century. The complex stands in the middle of the centre of Golling an der Salzach and is still used as a museum site today.
Over the decades the modest local collection has grown into a regional museum. Donations, bequests, purchases and finds from its own field research have built up a collection of around 15,000 objects on the natural and cultural history of the region, including individual pieces of international standing. The museum sees itself as a “regional WorldsMuseum” and organises its presentation into thematic worlds.
The focus is on archaeology, geology and palaeontology as well as the history of the castle and of the Tennengebirge, where the museum also carries out its own research. The museum is run by the market municipality of Golling; a circle of friends supports acquisitions, restoration work and scholarly research.
