About the museum
The kinOptikum grew out of the commitment of the cultural initiative Spielraum Gaspoltshofen, which had revived the former local cinema in the early 1990s. In May 2006 the cinema museum opened its doors in this building, and it is still run by the initiative today. It belongs to the Verbund Oberösterreichischer Museen (Association of Upper Austrian Museums).
The exhibition leads from the 19th century to the digital age. It begins with an activity station and a laboratory where visitors experience how moving images are made. It continues with silent film, the introduction of optical sound in the 1920s, twin-projector booths of the post-war period, widescreen and CinemaScope, and developments through to Dolby Surround sound.
Among the treasures is a Gaumont projector from 1899, with which Carl Friedrich Lifka once travelled through Austria-Hungary and which is one of the few of its kind still in working order worldwide. In the mini cinema, guests can choose from a large selection of films, including newsreels, school films, advertising films by Austrian companies, animated films and classics of the silent film era.
