About the museum

The building of the Schiffleutmuseum is one of the oldest houses in Stadl-Paura. Maximilian Pagl, later abbot of Lambach Abbey and son of a barge keeper, was born here in 1668. His father took over the salt barges arriving from Gmunden, secured them, had damage repaired and protected the salt from moisture and theft. In 1927 the Lambach flax-spinning mill bought the house and used it as housing for factory workers; in 1974 demolition threatened.

Instead, the boatmen's association (Schifferverein) achieved that the house was donated to the market municipality and converted into a museum. It was solemnly opened on June 16, 1979. For the Upper Austrian State Exhibition 2016, for which new salt sheds were built on the historic site, the exhibition was moved out; the house itself was renovated, extended and modernized, and reopened in May 2018.

Today the museum presents the salt transshipment point at Stadl-Paura, with a focus on salt shipping, shipbuilding, upstream haulage (Gegenzüge) and rafting on the Traun, on salt production in the Salzkammergut, and on the boatmen's guild and the hard life of the boatmen. A separate exhibition is devoted to Abbot Maximilian Pagl, who among other things had the Baroque Trinity Church of Stadl-Paura built.
