About the museum
The Kluppeneggerhof on the Alpl, at an altitude of around 1,200 metres, is the place where the poet Peter Rosegger was born on 31 July 1843 in the large parlour. The "front Kluppenegger" was first mentioned in documents in 1493; the ceiling beam in the parlour points to the completion of the farmhouse in 1744. In Rosegger's childhood the farm, at a good 58 Joch, was a medium-sized farm with stables for about 20 cattle, as well as pigs, sheep, grain barns, a flax-breaking hut and a mill.
Crop failures, cattle epidemics and illness led to debt, and in 1868 the farm had to be sold. Later it changed hands several times; an attempt by friends to buy it back for Rosegger's 70th birthday failed because of the price. In 1927 the Province of Styria acquired the farm, whose farmhouse had meanwhile fallen into disrepair. Two years later an administrator's house was built, for which stones from the birthplace were used. In the 1970s the flax-breaking hut was reconstructed, and on the occasion of the 1993 Provincial Exhibition the "Umadumstall" was rebuilt from wall remains and sketches by Rosegger.
Today the farmstead is part of the Rosegger Museums of the Universalmuseum Joanneum. The large parlour with smoke kitchen, the Umadumstall and the flax-breaking hut convey how hard and simple farm life was around the middle of the 19th century, which Rosegger described in many of his stories.
