About the museum

The prehistoric finds from the Bisamberg were first shown in the old municipal office of Langenzersdorf. The expansion into an art museum came about through the sculptor Anton Hanak, who lived in the town from 1901 to 1923. After a small exhibition in 1963/64 and the acquisition of part of his estate by the State of Lower Austria, an outpost of the state museum was set up in the former bottling hall of the champagne cellar; the Hanak Museum opened there in 1970.

After the death of Siegfried Charoux, his widow provided funds for an extension; the Charoux Museum followed in 1982. In 1989, the original sound studio of the composer Max Brand was authentically installed in the house. He had spent the last years of his life in Langenzersdorf.

Today the Museumsverein Langenzersdorf runs the house on a volunteer basis in cooperation with the municipality. The focus is on figurative Austrian sculpture of the 20th century, with works by Hanak, Charoux, Alois Heidel and Hanak's students. In addition there is the significant prehistoric collection with the settlement pit from the Burleiten field, a local history collection, and ceramics by Eduard Klablena. A sculpture garden and an exhibition room show supplementary exhibitions.
