About the museum

The Pöstlingberg railway began operating on May 29, 1898, only ten months after construction started. Unlike the original plan, it did not run as a rack railway but as an electric adhesion railway; with a gradient of over ten percent, it counted among the steepest of its kind. The distinctive half-timbered building with turrets on Landgutstraße served as the lower station.

In 2008 operation in its original form as a meter-gauge railway ended. By March 2009 the entire route had been converted to 900 millimeter gauge and connected to the LINZ AG tram network. Since then, the railway has run directly from Hauptplatz up to the Pöstlingberg, and the former lower station has been freed up.

In this historic setting, the Pöstlingbergbahn Museum today presents the past and present of the mountain railway. The exhibition deliberately contrasts the old building with modern materials. On display are information boards, historic and current vehicles, rails, pantographs, and an axle with drive crown and tong brake. A driving simulator lets visitors experience a downhill ride from the driver's perspective, and a small cinema shows films on the history of the railway.
