About the museum

For centuries, ship mills were widespread on the great rivers of Central Europe. They worked on the principle of a houseboat: milling machinery and drive, together with the water wheel, stood on a floating platform, the pontoon, and used the flow of the water. Over time these mills disappeared from the rivers, including on the lower Mur.

In Mureck a ship mill was newly built in 1997 based on the historic model. It bears the name "Bartholomäus Lorber," is considered the town's second landmark and, according to the house, is the only floating, working mill in traditional construction in all of Central Europe. Anchored in the Mur with steel cables, it cannot drift away; in severe storms, however, it has already sunk several times and had to be salvaged.

The mill lies in the middle of the Mureck floodplains, directly on the border with Slovenia, one of the largest river floodplains in Austria. On the bank, the Mühlenhof restaurant runs the visitor area; during tours, the entire grinding process is explained, from the water inlet to the sieve boxes.
