About the museum
The municipality of Bad Radkersburg has maintained a museum since 1935. The objects were first shown in the town hall, from 1941 in a house on the Hauptplatz and in 1948 provisionally in the kindergarten tower, before the collection received its permanent home in 1955: on 19 June 1955 the house at Emmenstraße 9 opened, at that time as a cultural centre with a library and music school. The Landesmuseum Joanneum supported the redesign.
The building is the former arsenal of the Styrian provincial estates, completed in 1588 together with the provisions house to plans by the fortress architect Francesco Marmoro de Pone. The portal and porch structures probably date from the 17th century, the façade articulation from the 18th century. The Renaissance courtyard with two-storey arcades and Tuscan stone columns shows the influence of Italian master builders.
In twelve rooms covering around 500 square metres, the museum tells the history of the town from the first traces of settlement through its heyday as a trading centre and fortress town, its decline through wars, religious conflicts and plague, and the World Wars to its development into a spa and tourist resort. The collection includes one of the largest closed collections of guild chests in Europe as well as prehistoric and early historic finds. In 2001 the museum received a recognition award at the Österreichischer Museumspreis.
