Muzej Špital

Museum in the former burgher house Špital in Gornja Radgona, with the collection Radgonski mostovi (Radgona Bridges) on the history and heritage of the town on the Mura.

Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

The Špital building stands in the centre of Gornja Radgona and has kept its original name through the centuries. It is a rare example of urban burgher architecture in Slovenia, with a unique ground plan and roof structure, and has undergone several structural and functional changes: before the Second World War it housed school premises, after the war flats, and for a time there was a disco on the ground floor.

Today the Radgona museum is housed on the upper floors. The permanent exhibition Radgonski mostovi presents bridges in the broadest sense: between the urban and suburban population, between vineyard owners and vine-dressers (viničarji), between the family and political history of the hinterland of the medieval town on an island in the Mura, and between the two national and language groups that have lived in this area since its settlement. The collection is complemented by multimedia presentations and an open storage depot, where visitors learn about the geological, archaeological, ethnological and artistic characteristics of the town.

On the ground floor are a wedding hall, which since 2015 has been the official venue for civil marriages in the municipality of Gornja Radgona, and a tasting room where Radgona sparkling wine (radgonska penina) is sold.
