About the museum
The museum commemorates Leopold Figl, who was born in Rust in the Tullnerfeld in 1902 and later served as Federal Chancellor, Foreign Minister and Governor (Landeshauptmann) of Lower Austria. In 1984, the first exhibition rooms opened in two rooms of the former elementary school building, which at the time served as a kindergarten. The idea came from the then parish priest of Rust, Franz Bruner, and from Fritz Salus. The opening on September 29 was attended by Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger.
In 1992, after the kindergarten moved out, the museum was considerably expanded according to plans by Werner Nedoschill. The content was developed by the historian Ernst Bruckmüller, who wanted to present Figl's life in its interplay with the political, economic and social developments of his time. A central room with a bust of Figl by Gustinus Ambrosi provides the basic information. The further rooms follow the stages of his life, from the beginnings of his political career and his persecution by the Nazi regime to his time as chancellor, foreign minister, president of the National Council and Governor.
In 2012, the exhibition was redesigned and supplemented with modern media. In 2019, a State Treaty stone and a replica of the Belvedere balcony with a Figl figure were added on the south façade. The museum belongs to the market municipality of Michelhausen, which also operates it.
