About the museum

Schloss Atzenbrugg in the Tullnerfeld belonged to Klosterneuburg Abbey from the late 14th century, which gave the complex its present form in 1633/34. In the years 1683 to 1686 it suffered severe war damage.

From 1816 Joseph Derffel, an uncle of Schubert's friend Franz von Schober, managed the estate. As a result, Franz Schubert came to Atzenbrugg with his circle of friends for several summers in a row from 1820. These carefree stays among friends are documented until about 1823 and form the basis for today's memorial.

The abbey sold the castle in 1960, and in 1977 the market town of Atzenbrugg acquired it. After restoration from 1982, the first Schubert Museum opened in 1986. In 2023 and 2024 the building was closed for redesign; since its reopening in 2024, the exhibition has examined Schubert's childhood, successes, working methods and difficult living circumstances from several perspectives. The restored park is the setting for Schubertiads and concerts.
