About the museum
Kornberg is first mentioned in a document in 1284. The complex arose as a fortified stronghold of the lords of Kornberg on a hill between Riegersburg and Feldbach and secured the surrounding area. In 1328 the castle passed to the lords of Graben, in 1664 to the Stadl family; in the 16th and 17th centuries it was converted into a Renaissance-style residential castle.
After a brief interlude under the House of Liechtenstein, the industrialist Charles François Bardeau bought the castle in 1871 and had it restored. His descendants still own Kornberg today and have gradually developed it into a cultural and excursion destination.
Visitors experience the castle above all on the immersive tour (Erlebnisführung), which leads into private rooms of the family; a multimedia show with “talking” picture frames tells the family history since 1871. A carpet exhibition can be seen in six rooms covering around 400 m², and large seasonal exhibitions of arts and crafts take place at Easter and in Advent. In addition there are the castle inn, events and weddings.
