About the museum
The Pfeilburg is one of the oldest buildings in Fürstenfeld. Its core is the Schwarzturm (Black Tower) from the 13th century, one of the few surviving medieval residential towers in Styria; wings were added in the 16th and 17th centuries. It owes its name to Hans Pfeilberg, who acquired the estate in 1490. In 1691 Christoph Liscutin set up Austria's first tobacco factory here, which became very important for the town.
Over time the building served as a school, barracks, military hospital and poorhouse. When demolition threatened, a museum association saved it in 1975; it was then extensively renovated between 1995 and 1999. Since 1999 it has housed the city museum.
Across about 700 square meters on three floors, the museum shows the roughly 800-year history of the border town. The Kruzitürken-Museum tells, in eleven rooms, of the Turkish and Kuruc incursions and displays a walk-in town model from the 17th century. The tobacco museum is devoted to the processing of tobacco, which shaped Fürstenfeld early on. The house was awarded the Austrian Museum Prize.
