About the museum
The castle towers above the border village of Nauders and was built as a court castle of the sovereign at the beginning of the 14th century; it is first mentioned in documents in 1325. After the Engadiners plundered and burned it down in 1499, it was rebuilt to its present size and thereafter served as a courthouse and prison. Until 1919 it remained the seat of state authorities, including the district court.
Since 1980 the castle has belonged to a private family, which restores it continuously and has made it accessible to visitors. Today large parts are set up as a museum, the Palas contains two holiday apartments, and a summer café is also part of the house.
The castle museum shows period rooms in their 16th-century state, the court offices, a Napoleon room and the castle chapel. Particularly impressive are the prison cells and the prison kitchen on the ground floor, the torture chambers with original instruments and shackles, the smoke kitchen and the Gothic parlours with medieval furniture; there are also the stories surrounding the sorcerer Florian Scheibenstock, a gallery with paintings by artists from Nauders in the former armoury, and exhibitions on agriculture and trades.
