About the museum

As early as 1905, history-minded citizens under Eduard Kyrle founded a museum association to collect evidence of Schärding's past and make it accessible to the public. In the same year, the town provided the outer castle gate as a place for exhibitions and storage. The building is characterised by the once four-storey castle gate, to which a two-storey Renaissance building was added on the town side in 1580.

In nine rooms, the museum leads visitors from prehistoric excavation finds and early settlement history through the town's eras up to the present day. Separate rooms are devoted to Inn river shipping and milling, the craft guilds, and a burghers' parlour with valuable furniture, glassware, traditional costumes and portraits. Further sections show religious folk art with votive tablets and prayer books; the second upper floor deals with the town's military history.

One focus of the collection is masterpieces of Gothic and Baroque woodcarving, such as a Madonna and Child by Hans Multscher, as well as works by Johann Peter Schwanthaler the Elder and the Spanish Christ by an unknown Gothic master. A 3D tour makes it possible to visit from home as well. The Schlossgalerie in Schlossgasse, with changing exhibitions, is affiliated with the museum.
