About the museum

The Schütz Art Museum goes back to the passion for collecting of Josef and Irene Schütz. Construction entrepreneur Josef Schütz made art his profession more than 25 years ago and founded galleries in Linz and Vienna. The high point of these activities was a purpose-built museum building in Engelhartszell on the Danube, which opened on November 14, 2021.

The building arranges its levels around an open staircase core, which at the same time connects the heat pumps in the ground with the solar collectors on the roof. The first floor houses the foyer, café and museum shop, as well as the large column-free hall for changing exhibitions; the second floor holds the permanent exhibition hall, with access to a covered sculpture terrace overlooking the Danube.

The heart of the collection is Austrian painting of Classical Modernism, complemented by works from the 19th century to the present, including by Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka, Egger-Lienz and Kubin. An artists-in-residence program allows international artists to work in studios in the house; visitors can meet them there.
