About the museum
Sigharting Castle was built in 1570 as a moated castle and seat of the lordship of Sigharting; the moat was filled in during the 18th century. In the 19th century the building came into the possession of the municipality, which housed offices, a school and a gendarmerie post there, among other things. Between 1975 and 1983 it underwent thorough renovation.
Today the castle is both a museum and an event venue. The exhibition "Sigharting 900" leads through the cultural, social and economic history of the village by means of selected themes and takes up current questions such as the changing appearance of the village, demographic change and the role of women in the village community.
One focus is the postal service: the exhibition shows the 220-year history of the post in Sigharting and of the influential postmaster family Dosch-Starzengruber. Other themes are festivals and celebrations through the course of life, customs through the year and especially wedding customs, the history of local associations and the digitised picture archive "Bei uns in Sigharting". In changing special exhibitions, traditional local businesses also present themselves.
