About the museum
The Steyrer Kripperl is not a nativity scene in the classical sense but a rod puppet theatre whose origins lie in two travelling nativity scenes from the mid-19th century. The first documentary mention dates from 1919. After several venues, the theatre found its home in 1923 in the Innerberger Stadel on Grünmarkt.
On the three-part stage, around 450 original figures perform, the oldest of them over 200 years old. 23 different scenes show old trades and scenes from everyday life in Steyr as well as Christmas stories; performances are in dialect. The auditorium seats about 110.
The performance is today in the hands of a small group of active performers; the schedule and advance ticket sales are handled by the Verein Heimatpflege Steyr and the tourist board. Following the modernisation of the building for the Upper Austrian State Exhibition 2021, performances continue to be held there. On 2 October 2018 the Kripperlspiel was added to the Austrian Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
