About the museum

The tunnel was built from 1943 as an air-raid shelter near the confluence of the Enns and Steyr rivers and was constructed by prisoners of the Steyr-Münichholz concentration camp subcamp. During the Second World War, Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG was one of the largest armaments companies in the German Reich; thousands of forced labourers and concentration camp prisoners had to work there.

The Mauthausen Komitee Steyr developed an exhibition in the roughly 140-metre-long, U-shaped passage, which opened on 25 October 2013. It was scholarly curated by Regina Wonisch and designed by Bernhard Denkinger. Because of the humidity, it largely dispenses with original objects and instead works with accounts and quotations from eyewitnesses. In 2014 it received the Austrian Museum Prize.

The tour follows the period from the crises of the 1930s through the "Anschluss" of 1938 and the expansion of armaments production to the end of the war. The focus is on the Steyr-Münichholz camp and the everyday life of the forced labourers, as well as resistance in Steyr and how the Nazi past has been dealt with since 1945. Since 2013 the Museum Arbeitswelt has provided educational supervision of the site; since 2021 it has also been independently accessible to individual visitors.
