About the museum

Former and still active employees of Telekom Austria, formerly the postal and telegraph administration, joined together in Upper Austria in 2003 to document the development of telecommunications in Austria. Some of them had already taken part in the special exhibition “100 Jahre Telefonie in OÖ” (on the history of telephony in Upper Austria) at the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz in 1985/86. In 2004 the association “Nachrichtentechnik einst und jetzt” was registered, based in Linz.

The exhibits collected for this purpose were initially stored at the State Museum; most of the collection was returned in 2015 and is now in a Telekom Austria warehouse in Vienna. Based on a former practice dial exchange from the shortwave radio building in Fleckendorf, the association set up its own telecom museum in the telecommunications building in Ried im Innkreis, on the sixth floor of Schillerstraße 10.

The museum displays a broad cross-section of the facilities that were in service in the telecommunications networks of the Austrian postal service after 1945: manual switchboards, selector systems for local and long-distance switching, digital switching technology up to the IP-based network, transmission, radio and mobile technology, test and measuring equipment, and terminal devices such as telephones, public call stations, teleprinters and private branch exchanges. In addition, the association maintains an extensive archive on the history of telecommunications in Austria.
