About the museum

The museum is dedicated to the painter and woodcut artist Werner Berg, who was born in Elberfeld in 1904, settled at the Rutarhof in Lower Carinthia in 1931 and lived there as a farmer and artist until his death in 1981. His work has been shown in Bleiburg since 1968; in 2018 the museum celebrated its 50th anniversary. The operator is the town municipality of Bleiburg/Pliberk.

The core of the museum is a town house from the 17th century that was heavily altered in the Biedermeier period. Between 1995 and 2009 it was extended in several phases to plans by the architect Peter Fleiß, including a skylit hall in the courtyard, a creative room and a panoramic lift. The building is a listed monument.

The permanent presentation comprises over 150 oil paintings, woodcuts and drawings showing Berg's view of Carinthia's rural world, of people, work and the seasons. In addition there are annually changing exhibitions that relate Berg's work to other art, a sculpture garden and designs on the facade.
