About the museum
The museum was set up in 1982 in the former primary school of Globasnitz and reopened after a renovation in 2006. It shows finds from the settlement on the Hemmaberg and from the Jauntal valley: it is named after the pre-Celtic deity Iouenat, after whom the Roman settlement of Iuenna was also named.
Archaeological excavations on the Hemmaberg began in 1906 and have been continued systematically since 1978. They uncovered five churches from around 500 AD, an early Christian pilgrimage centre of the Migration Period, as well as an Ostrogothic cemetery that is significant for the entire Alpine-Adriatic region.
In six exhibition rooms, skeletal finds from the late antique cemetery can be seen on the ground floor; on the upper floor are the Roman settlement, pilgrimage culture, mosaics and the traces of Arian and Catholic communities; a mezzanine is devoted to the later veneration of saints. An adjoining lapidarium shows Roman funerary inscriptions and reliefs. The museum is a partner museum of the Landesmuseum Kärnten and has held the Austrian museum quality seal since 2014.
