About the museum
The Muzej Ravne na Koroškem is a unit of the Koroški pokrajinski muzej (Carinthian Regional Museum), which was established in June 2002 by a decree of twelve municipalities of the Carinthian region; the Koroški muzej Ravne na Koroškem and the Koroški pokrajinski muzej Slovenj Gradec merged into the new museum. The founding of the Workers' Museum in Ravne, from which today's museum developed, was marked in 1953 by the installation of a water hammer, the repač, in the open air.
The Stara železarna is the historic industrial complex of the oldest preserved buildings of the former Ravne Ironworks: the štauharija, the personnel building and the laboratory. They were declared a cultural monument of local importance in 1994. The complex preserves more than four centuries of industrial heritage of the Mežica Valley.
In the Old Ironworks the following are on display: the exhibition Sijaj jekla (The Shine of Steel) on the 400-year tradition of steelmaking in the Mežica Valley; Štauharija, a former clearing forge from the time of the First World War, with industrial machines and tools; the exhibition Mater fabrika on the Ravne Ironworks; and the Kovačnica (forge) with traditional forging techniques. The museum also includes displays at Ravne Castle and at the Prežihova bajta, the memorial museum of the writer Prežihov Voranc in Kotlje.
