About the museum

The building on Hilberstraße in the center of Igls dates back in its core to the 16th century. It was originally a farm, and later served as an elementary school and municipal hall. The City of Innsbruck, to which Igls belongs, acquired it for museum purposes; today it houses the tourist office and, on the second floor, reached through its own entrance, a small museum.

The initiative came from Wolfgang Platzer, head of the Igls ski school. Almost all exhibits are loans from local residents. The focus is on the history of winter sports at the foot of the Patscherkofel, with skis, bindings, sleds, skeleton sleds, a bobsled from the 1930s and photographs; a native of Igls invented the Backenbindung ski binding.

Another area displays finds and a model of the Brandopferplatz (burnt-offering site) on the Goldbichl south of Igls, a Bronze and Iron Age cult site that began around 1800 BC and was used until the Roman conquest. In addition, there are masks and costumes of the Winteraustreiben (winter-driving-out festival) and a large Krippe (nativity scene) that depicts the house itself and the village center.
