About the museum

The Grassmayr bell foundry has been working in Innsbruck since 1599 and is regarded as Austria's oldest family-run craft business. Its bell museum has existed since 1993 in the company's premises on Leopoldstrasse and is a private museum directly connected to the foundry's ongoing production.

The museum shows the development of the bell in Western culture, historic bells from Austria and other countries, photographs, and the secrets of the bell founders' guild. Visitors can see the old casting hall with its historic wood-fired furnace, chain cranes and casting pits, and watch the founders at work in the modern workshop. A production cycle lasts three to four months, so the state of work changes every day.

In the "Klangraum" (sound room), bell tones can be heard, seen and felt; visitors can create sounds themselves. For combining museum, foundry and sound room, the house says it received the Austrian Museum Prize and the Maecenas Prize.
