About the museum
The Tiroler MuseumsBahnen was founded in 1983 as a non-profit association. The occasion was the Stubaitalbahn's conversion from alternating to direct current, which threatened the old vehicles and installations with scrapping. The members persuaded the City of Innsbruck and the transport operator to hand over to the association the old Stubaitalbahn depot and rooms in the Stubaitalbahnhof. From 1984 the Localbahnmuseum was built up, and it opened in 1985.
Today the exhibition occupies two floors in the former station restaurant of the Old Stubaitalbahn Station. It gives an overview of around 25 existing and discontinued local railways of the Tyrol European Region – North and East Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino – with pictures, documents, models and objects from the everyday life of staff and passengers.
The vehicle collection stands in the former Stubaitalbahn depot, which was converted for museum use in 2000. On three tracks, motor cars, trailers and freight wagons from the 19th and 20th centuries can be viewed from inside and out, and a gallery offers a view from above. The association owns 27 vehicles, most of them in working order, including the last operational rack locomotive of the Ritten Railway; a Stubaitalbahn railcar has been a protected monument since 2007.
The museum is run by volunteers. On opening days the association operates a museum shuttle with historic cars through the city and offers special trips; in 2022 it received the Austrian Railway Culture Prize for the restoration of a train of the Innsbruck – Hall in Tirol local railway.
