About the museum
The Tirol Panorama is one of the venues of the Tyrolean State Museums and opened in March 2011 on the Bergisel in the south of Innsbruck. The impetus was the wish to give the Innsbruck giant circular painting a new home suitable for its conservation – close to the site where the Third Battle of Bergisel of the Tyrolean Rebellion took place on 13 August 1809. The painting had moved here in autumn 2010.
The circular painting, about 1,000 square metres in size, was painted by the Munich artist Michael Zeno Diemer under the supervision of the history painter Franz von Defregger in just three months. It depicts the fighting of the Tyrolean insurgents around Andreas Hofer against Bavarian and French troops and lets visitors stand in the middle of the action.
The new building was designed by the Innsbruck firm Stoll.Wagner, which prevailed in a competition with around 80 participants; the interior fit-out and exhibition design are by hg merz of Stuttgart. The low building is set into a hollow in the terrain facing the Sill Gorge, and the rotunda for the painting lies on the second basement level. An underground passage connects the new building with the listed Kaiserjäger Museum, the regimental museum of the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger.
Besides the panorama, the permanent exhibition “Schauplatz Tirol” is devoted to the “Myth of Tyrol”, with objects on the nature, religion, politics and people of the region. A separate section commemorates the Tyrolean Kaiserschützen, and the Kaiserjäger Museum shows the military history of Tyrol from the 19th into the 20th century.
