About the museum

The museum was established in 1987, when Austria celebrated 150 years of railways, on the grounds of Sigmundsherberg station on the Franz-Josefs-Bahn. The town was long an important railway junction: from 1880 there was a locomotive shed here, later a traction depot with over a hundred employees, which was dissolved after the end of steam traction in 1973.

A few years after the opening, the exhibition rooms were also completed, and in 1994 the association "Waldviertler Eisenbahnmuseum Sigmundsherberg" was founded, which has run the museum on a voluntary basis ever since. Because space soon ran short, the museum was extended, rebuilt and modernised from 2008 to 2010.

Today, in three large rooms, it shows a good 600 objects on railway history – operating equipment from the Monarchy, from the time of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and from the years up to the State Treaty. On display are a furnished historic waiting room, a dispatcher's office and a signal box, the engine shed from 1880, as well as draisines, a rail bicycle and historic locomotives. A model at a scale of 1:360 recalls the Monarchy's large prisoner-of-war camp at Sigmundsherberg. The association continually restores vehicles and holds annual festivals centred on the railway.
