About the museum
The Kempisch Museum in Brecht was founded in 1905 and is therefore the second-oldest museum in the Campine. Until early 2015 it was run by the Geschied- en Oudheidkundige Kring van Brecht vzw (History and Archaeology Circle of Brecht); the Kring then transferred the building and the collection to the municipality. The Kring still has a library and an archive with information about the museum and about the history and heritage of Brecht.
On 12 September 2020 the museum reopened under the name Kempuseum, on the Gemeenteplaats, after a fresh, contemporary makeover focused on interaction and experience. Through well-known and lesser-known stories, visitors gain insight into events from prehistory up to the present day.
The Kempuseum is also a tourist satellite point for Brecht: at weekends you can find tourist information and regional products there. Volunteers help with collection management, the inventory, guided tours and supervision during opening hours, and artists or photographers can hire the museum space for temporary exhibitions.
