About the museum

Since 1999, volunteers from the Vrienden van het Zoerselbos (Friends of the Zoerselbos) have kept the Flemish visitor centre Zoerselbos open, in cooperation with the Agency for Nature and Forest. The centre is housed in an old farmhouse opposite the inn Het Boshuisje and is the meeting point and starting point for walks in the area.

The permanent exhibition tells how the Zoerselbos was preserved: a large subdivision plan was narrowly averted, and you can see how the area has developed since it was protected. It also covers the history of the forest, which goes back to the 13th century, the plants and animals, and the role of the forest in the work of Hendrik Conscience: the story of De loteling is set in the inn Het Boshuisje.

At the back of the building is an old-fashioned farmhouse room with photographs and antique objects from the Boshuisje. Through that room you enter a traditional farmers’ flower garden. In the green shop you can find field guides, reference books, bird food and nest boxes.
