About the museum
The Museum Albert Van Dyck in Schilde is dedicated to the painter Albert Van Dyck. He was born in Turnhout in 1902, moved to Schilde in 1931 and lived there until his death in 1951. Van Dyck is considered one of the standard-bearers of animism, a movement that opposed the expressionism that dominated the Flemish art world at the time and that paid more attention to introspection.
The landscapes around Schilde inspired him for more than twenty years. His work evolved towards purely pictorial painting, with particular attention to the child and the bare Kempen landscape. The municipality of Schilde holds 298 works by Van Dyck that the Vlaamse Gemeenschap lent to it.
Alongside the permanent collection, the museum organises temporary exhibitions, including on ceramics and on the music-hall culture of the 1920s. Visitors can also explore the museum virtually via a 3D walk on the municipality's website, and children can get a museum game there. Since 1 April 2026 the museum has been temporarily closed for renovation work on the town hall in which it is housed.
