Bruegelmuseum

Museum in a gentleman's house on the Markt in Peer, with life-size reproductions of all paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

Opening hoursAdmission €6

About the museum

The Bruegelmuseum is dedicated to Pieter Bruegel the Elder and is located on the Markt in Peer, in the gentleman's house De Beer. The building has a neoclassical appearance from the 19th century, but its core belongs to the oldest houses in the town. It was formerly one whole with the neighbouring property at Markt 17.

Where Bruegel was born exactly, nobody knows for certain. One tradition places his birth around 1525 in Grote-Brogel, near Peer, but there is no proof for this. In 2006 Peer brought an exhibition from Brussels to the town with life-size reproductions of all 41 paintings by the master. Around these reproductions a permanent museum was set up in 2008.

In the museum you see Bruegel's work, whose originals hang scattered across the world, brought together in one place. A short documentary examines whether Bruegel was really born in Peer, with photographer Michiel Hendryckx and artist Koen Vanmechelen among those speaking.
