About the museum
The Rijtuigmuseum Bree was founded in 1996 by the curator André. As a young man he was a show jumper; later he switched to driving, the handling of horse-drawn carriages. His first carriage was a two-wheeled cart, like the ones doctors and notaries once drove, but in very poor condition and almost ready for the scrap heap.
To restore the carriage he studied the techniques by which carriages used to be made and learned from experienced craftsmen. He masters woodwork, blacksmithing, welding, painting and leatherwork. Through the driving club De Limburgse Aanspanning, fellow members asked him for repairs, and he gradually devoted himself more and more to restoring antique coaches.
Visitors from outside the world of driving also became interested in his private collection, and so he decided to open it to the public. Today the museum shows sixteen restored coaches, supplemented by curiosities from the same period. Alongside showing the collection, restoration and conservation remain an important part of the work.
