About the museum
Antoinette Vandenbulcke began collecting old everyday objects illustrating daily life in the 20th century in the 1950s. Together with the Moense Heemkundige Kring ‘Mulnis’ (Moen local history circle), she made that collection visible. In 1986 the first Heemkundig Museum opened in a former school building on the Beekstraat. Because that building was in poor condition, it had been closed to the public since 1997.
After the nuns of Moen left, the municipality of Zwevegem made the empty monastery on the Moenplaats available. On 8 September 2000 the museum moved there. On the ground floor are the reception and temporary theme exhibitions. On the upper floor, the museum proper is spread over four rooms with a corridor, a chapel and an archive room.
The collection is built around themes such as education, household, crafts (sewing, bobbin lace, tobacco, flax, baking), religion, clothing and small trade. Visitors find a reconstructed living room, a classroom around 1900 and a small grocery shop.
