About the museum

Het Lijsternest in Ingooigem was the home of the Flemish writer Stijn Streuvels (1871-1969). Looking for a quiet place to write, he bought land outside the village in 1903. The villa was designed by architect Jozef Viérin in an early regionalist style, with contributions from artists of the Kortrijk Kunstgilde. In 1905 Streuvels moved in with his newly married wife Alida Staelens; he lived there for the rest of his life. Through a wide window next to his writing desk you can still look out over the rolling landscape that inspired him.

Streuvels did not want a statue, but hoped that his house would remain intact after his death. That is what happened: Het Lijsternest was preserved with the artworks of his friends, his travel souvenirs, his extensive library and his writing desk. The Department of Culture, Youth and Media of the Flemish government and the Letterenhuis look after the house. A tablet with photos and films guides visitors through the house, the garden and the life and work of Streuvels.

The Streuvels house works seasonally. From April to the end of September the museum is open to the public; in the winter months it is closed and writers take up residence in the writers' residency. The house also organises interviews, book presentations, guided walks and lectures.
