About the museum
Since 1996 the museum has stood on the edge of a water catchment area in Avelgem-Waarmaarde and is run by V.O.B.o.W. It centres on the excavations at the Kerkhove-Kouter site, which took place from the 1970s to the 1990s.
It shows the largest collection of archaeological finds from the West Flemish part of the Scheldt valley, from the Stone Age, the Roman period and the Merovingian period. Two visualisations of ground plans depict a Roman post, an administrative and logistical base at a junction of land and water routes.
The exhibition follows the path from excavation find to museum piece and also looks at water extraction, past and present. During excavation campaigns at the archaeological site, the trenches can form part of the guided tour.
A depot and study centre preserves finds and excavation documents from some thirty West Flemish sites. Students, researchers and professionals can consult them on request, and part of the collection can be searched online.
