About the museum
The Motorium occupies the former Saroléa factories in the old Marexhe district of Herstal, a stone's throw from the centre. Since 1998 the non-profit association AIGS has housed part of its support services for people there, and it also runs cultural and educational activities: exhibitions, walks, art galleries, a restaurant and a conference room.
The Saroléa museum tells the history of the site, from the weapons workshops to the AIGS's move into the buildings, passing through the golden age of motorcycling in the 1920s. Visitors discover historic motorcycles, blacksmiths' and gunsmiths' tools and objects from the Belle Époque. The visit also looks at social and working-class history, in particular the evolution of women's rights.
The project has an educational aim: to help young people understand the importance of the industrial past of the Liège and Herstal region. Around the museum, the Motorium offers a guided walk on the slag heaps (terrils), activities around the Cité Panaché, a sound walk and a teaching restaurant, Le Saroléa.
