Musée de la Vie rurale de Xhoris

Small village museum in the former municipal hall of Xhoris: everyday objects, the municipal administration and a complete cobbler’s workshop.

Opening hoursAdmission €3

About the museum

The museum opened its doors on 21 December 1974 in the attic of the former municipal hall of Xhoris. It was founded on the initiative of the village’s last mayor before the merger of municipalities, who noticed that everyday life was changing quickly: the arrival of household appliances was prompting residents to get rid of their old objects. With two other former villagers, he decided to collect them and set up a museum.

Most of the objects on display come from the village itself. The seals, stamps and documents of the municipal administration were already on site, and many residents have entrusted items over the years. The museum evokes vanished trades and customs: among the most remarkable pieces is the complete workshop of the village cobbler, bequeathed to the museum, with its rare cutting die of about 250 kg. The rooms are spread over two levels.

The museum is run by the Xhoris cultural committee and today attracts mainly local history enthusiasts, nostalgic visitors and curious people who want to know how earlier generations lived. Visits last about one hour.
