About the museum
The Château de Logne occupies one hectare of ruins and underground passages on top of a steep cliff overlooking the valleys of the Ourthe and the Lembrée. The discovery of prehistoric flint shows that the site is very old. In the 5th century it helped defend Roman territory; in the 9th century the monks of Stavelot sheltered the relics of Saint Remacle there during the Norman invasions; in the 11th century it became the main fortress of the abbey's estates. In 1138 Abbot Wibald had the entire site rebuilt.
In 1427 the abbey handed the castle to the de la Marck family, several members of which were nicknamed the “Sangliers des Ardennes” (Robert “le Diable” and Jeannot “le Bâtard”). Logne became a base for raids across the Ardennes and the lands of the prince-bishops. The castle was captured in 1521.
Today the visit takes in the ruins of the lord's residence, the upper courtyard, the barbican, the casemates and the 56-metre well, as well as a panorama over the Ourthe, the Ardennes ridges and the edge of the Condroz. Free audio guides in four languages accompany the visit. The site is run together with the Domaine de Palogne by the non-profit association D.T.V.L., with regular restoration work supported by the Walloon Heritage Agency and the Province of Liège.
