About the museum
The Museum voor Heem- en Oudheidkunde is run by the Koninklijke Kring voor Heemkunde Kontich, which has existed since 1943. Since September 1999 the museum has been housed in the new buildings of the municipal library and cultural complex De Brouwerij on Sint-Jansplein.
The collection has two sections. The folk culture section holds a prestigious collection of textiles, mainly samplers and drawing cloths. When these were exhibited in 2000 the collection numbered 147 pieces, and according to the local history circle it is one of the five largest in Western Europe.
The archaeology section shows finds from Kontich and the surrounding area, from the Stone Age (up to 3500 BC) through the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the Gallo-Roman period to the Middle Ages. Many finds come from excavations by AVRA (Antwerpse Vereniging voor Romeinse Archeologie). A collection of fossils from Kontich and the surrounding area also offers a glimpse of the region's geological past.
