Stampe en Vertongen Museum

Volunteer-run museum at Antwerp airport about the city’s aviation history, with SV-4 aircraft and planes from two world wars.

Opening hoursAdmission €8

About the museum

The Stampe en Vertongen Museum was founded in 1995 by Karel Bos and Danny Cabooter and has been run by volunteers ever since. The museum honours the aviation pioneers Jean Stampe and Maurice Vertongen, who ran an aircraft factory in Antwerp where, among other aircraft, the SV-4 was built, one of the best-known Belgian aeroplanes.

The museum tells the story of aviation in Antwerp. It began in 1909 with the first Antwerp aviation week on the Wilrijkse Plein, which closed in 1921. In 1923 the airport opened on its current site, initially with three railway carriages as infrastructure. The airport building that opened in 1930 was one of the most modern of its time and is today the only fully operational building from that period.

The route passes a replica of the first airport building, aircraft models and a recreated workshop of the Stampe factories. The static section has replicas of First World War aircraft, a North American T-6G Texan from the Second World War, a Fieseler Fi-103 (V-1) and a Fouga Magister of the Belgian Air Force. The flying section consists of SV-4s, which are privately owned, stand in the hangar next to the museum and are regularly used for air baptisms.
