About the museum
Cravaticum is a boutique museum which, by its own description, is considered the only museum in the world dedicated to the cravat. It is located in the centre of Zagreb, on Opatička ulica next to the Kamenita vrata (Stone Gate).
The story of the cravat begins in the 17th century. According to legend, women and girls tied scarves around the necks of the men who left Croatia for the Thirty Years’ War, as a sign of luck and a safe return. The French called these scarves “la cravate” after the Croats, and in 1667 a special regiment, the Royal Cravates, was formed in France. The transition of the cravat from military use to fashion is attributed to Louis XIII.
Through modern and interactive displays, the exhibition traces the history of the cravat from its romantic beginnings to an avant-garde future. It reveals how much silk is needed for one cravat, who designed today’s form and how many ways there are to tie it.
