About the museum

The public activity of the Hrvatski povijesni muzej (Croatian History Museum) is linked to the Narodni muzej in Zagreb and the opening of its first collections to visitors in summer 1846. From 1940 it operated as an independent museum institution under the name Hrvatski narodni povijesni muzej, formed from the Archaeological-Historical Department of the Narodni muzej. In 1991, at the time of democratic change and the independence of the Republic of Croatia, the Povijesni muzej Hrvatske and the Muzej revolucije naroda Hrvatske were merged into a single state institution, the Hrvatski povijesni muzej.

The museum’s holdings number almost 300,000 objects arranged in sixteen collections, among them archaeological, numismatic, stone monument, sacral object, heraldic and sphragistic collections, as well as collections of weapons, uniforms, flags, paintings, prints and sculptures, maps, documents and photographs.

The museum operates at two locations in Zagreb: in the Baroque Vojković-Oršić-Kulmer-Rauch Palace on Matoševa Street, where all exhibitions and public programmes take place, and in part of the Meštrović Pavilion on Trg žrtava fašizma. It also administers the Memorijalni muzej Ivana Gorana Kovačića (Ivan Goran Kovačić Memorial Museum) in Lukovdol. Since 22 March 2020, due to the consequences of the earthquake and the comprehensive renovation of the palace, the museum in Zagreb has been closed to the public until further notice.
