About the museum

Kuća o batani is part of the Ekomuzej Batana (Batana Ecomuseum) in Rovinj, founded in 2004. It is dedicated to the batana, a flat-bottomed wooden fishing boat that has become the main symbol of the town; it is the first museum in the Mediterranean devoted to a single fishing vessel. For decades batanas were built by local shipwrights and caulkers, and they were used by fishermen and many Rovinj families.

The permanent display is housed in a 17th-century house in the old town, across three exhibition spaces on two floors. It is designed in a contemporary and multimedia way, with film and slide projections, models, music, photographs, interactive exhibits and original objects donated by the citizens of Rovinj. Visitors learn about the origin and types of batana, its parts, its builders and caulkers, the building process and the historic Rovinj shipyards, as well as the everyday life, music, language and gastronomy of the town.

Since 2004 the Ekomuzej, in cooperation with the City of Rovinj, has built new batanas, and visitors can watch their construction and repair in the Mali škver (Small Shipyard). In December 2016 the Ekomuzej Batana was inscribed in the UNESCO Register of Best Practices for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the World.
